Medicare Part D

Prescription drug coverage to help lower your costs

What is Medicare Part D?

Medicare Part D adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private Fee-for-Service Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. These plans are offered by insurance companies and other private companies approved by Medicare.

How Part D Works

1

1. Choose a Plan

Select a Part D plan based on the drugs you take and your budget.

2

2. Pay Monthly Premium

Most plans charge a monthly premium in addition to your Part B premium.

3

3. Coverage Phases

Part D has different coverage phases including deductible, initial coverage, and catastrophic coverage.

4

4. Use Preferred Pharmacies

Get better prices by using pharmacies in your plan's network.

What Part D Covers

  • 💊At least 2 drugs in each drug category
  • 💊All commercially available vaccines (recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices)
  • 💊Brand-name and generic prescription drugs
  • 💊Drugs on the plan's formulary (list of covered drugs)

Important to Know

If you don't join a Part D plan when you're first eligible, you may pay a late enrollment penalty if you join later, unless you have other creditable prescription drug coverage.
